Although this task seems very LMS-driven and dependent, as it would be in a completely online course, I think this could also be accomplished in a blended environment. The formative assessments and activities can demonstrate competency and let the instructor know if the student is ready to demonstrate competency or if addition exposure to required concepts before proceeding.

The summative assessments are the ways in which the student can demonstrate mastery of a competency. At the instructor’s discretion, the student does not have to demonstrate competency in all, or at the same level in all, summative assessments to achieve competence, mastering the learning objective.
