K12 needs to strategically manage the tidal wave of artificial intelligence (AI) that our society is facing. In an effort to discuss and prioritize AI-related decisions, our district needed to build AI capacity within our system.
Include Diverse Voices Early
Rather than creating AI guidance behind closed doors, district leaders formed a representative AI Task Force that included administrators, instructional coaches, media specialists, classroom teachers, and district leaders from across the region. This approach ensured that multiple perspectives informed decision-making and helped build trust in the process before any guidance was released.
Education Before Implementation
The task force spent significant time building shared understanding of AI, examining resources from organizations such as ISTE, Common Sense Media, and neighboring districts. Discussions centered on academic integrity, creativity, bias, misinformation, and data privacy. By investing in learning first, the group was able to create guidance grounded in both research and practical classroom realities.
Change Management Matters
Perhaps the most important objective was that successful AI implementation depends on people, not just tools. Survey results revealed varying levels of enthusiasm and concern among educators. Instead of ignoring resistance, district leaders we stratigacally used the feedback to shape professional learning opportunities and communication plans. The result was a more thoughtful rollout strategy designed to support educators as they navigate a rapidly evolving landscape.
AI adoption in education is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. By engaging stakeholders, prioritizing learning, and focusing on change management, districts can create a foundation for responsible and effective AI integration.
